Cottage Do Paraiso

This very private, cosy and romantic stone cottage is located just above what is virtually a private beach for the few neighbouring properties, and was beautifully converted from an old fisherman’s cottage that is believed to be the first dwelling on this fajã (a flat strip of land at the foot of a cliff). The whole cottage is open plan. The comfortable sitting area is a Juliet balcony over the beach and sea and is separated from the bedroom area by two doors that open the full width of the cottage, allowing you to wake up to that breath-taking view. Further back is the modern shower room and the fully equipped kitchen that still features the original bread oven. Outside is a very private courtyard with overflowing bougainvillea, which features an outdoor dining table and a couple of sunbeds under a private curtained canopy, and again benefits from that spectacular sea-view. A lovely little beach hut is located right on the rocky beach 30 metres below, and shared by the neighbouring Paradise Villas. Access is via a pathway with steps that leads from the level of the cottage down to the beach. A front terrace with sunbeds, outdoor shower and built-in barbecue and large table (seating for 16), is complemented with a kitchen (fridge, 4-ring hob) and toilet. A few minutes by car will take you to the resort town of Calheta, which, with its man-made golden beaches, is popular with tourists and locals alike. There is a beautiful marina and a good choice of bars and restaurants. There are a handful of boutique shops and a good supermarket. Car hire is essential at Cottage do Paraiso as the cottage is located off the beaten track, just above sea-level at the bottom of the cliff. Confident drivers will be rewarded with total tranquillity and privacy in this unique location. However as the access is narrow and steep, for your peace of mind you should hire a smaller size car.
