Description

Alton Castle is perfect for extended families looking for a social bubble short break or holiday in hostel style accommodation with a difference!
Maybe you have Harry Potter fans in your midst who dream of boarding at Hogwarts? Or an aspiring Princess who wants to climb a stone staircase to bed? Whilst we don't claim any connection to Harry Potter and we can't promise a Prince Charming, we do claim to have a stunning castle with dormitory style accommodation for you to have all to yourself. And whilst we don't have real dragons, we do have our beautiful dragon scale roof that glimmers gold and green in the sunlight.
Alton Castle is set in its own spacious grounds in the picturesque village of Alton. The castle is a Grade II star listed building, designed by Augustus Pugin (he also designed the Palace of Westminster and Alton Towers!) and sits majestically above the Churnet Valley. Your bedrooms are located on 2 floors of the Castle and are dormitory style with bunk beds, complete with winding staircases (don’t worry, we can also cater for those with limited mobility – just ask for more details). Each floor also has a shower/toilet block and an en-suite twin room.
We are within walking distance of the village shop, post office and several pubs serving wholesome food and real ales. For the thrill seekers in your family, we are only a ten minute drive from Alton Towers.
For nature lovers and outdoor activity enthusiasts, it's just a 10 minute walk to join up with the picturesque Churnet Valley network of footpaths to explore by foot or by bicycle. Why not take a gentle 2-3 mile walk along the track, known as The Old Railway Line, to Denstone and treat yourself to locally produced food and gifts at the award winning Denstone Hall Farm Shop & Cafe. Or take a four-mile circular walk from the Ramblers' Retreat tearoom through the Churnet Valley and Dimmingsdale. Ashbourne, Dovedale and the Peak District are also a short drive away.
For real adventure lovers, enquire about our own outward bounds activities, run in and around the grounds of Alton Castle (only available by prior arrangement and tailored to your family's requirements).
After a day of adventuring, there's a boot room to store muddy boots and coats and large dining room with stained glass windows, rib vaulted ceiling and refectory tables, where weary but happy adventurers can share tales new and old.
The kitchen is a professional kitchen and has plenty of room to share the cooking duties! If you fancy a night off from cooking, why not arrange in advance for us to cook dinner for you? We can provide a hearty 2-course meal for £15 per person (£12 for children under 11). Please enquire for more details and to book.
There are no TV's at Alton Castle, but for those nervous of being away from tech fun for too long, we have projectors and WiFi dongles. So if you want to bring your Xbox, PlayStation or laptop for a family movie night or gaming tournament, you can. Sore losers can be banished to the Moat! Did we forget to mention that?
At Alton Castle the emphasis is on thrills not frills!
