Description

The Badger Sett is a lovely 200 year old barn with modern single storey extensions to either side and is our home from home. We use it ourselves as often as we can (with our two children and very well behaved dog). In between times we invite you to come and enjoy it too. We want to make you feel at home and aim to provide the highest quality of facilities, fittings and service.

Since buying The Badger Sett in late 2010 we’ve completely remodeled and refurbished the cottage to make it in to the comfortable, spacious and extremely relaxing place that it is today.

The cottage is all on one level (so no stairs to worry about) and the safe, enclosed garden make it ideal for families with children.

Inside is luxuriously furnished with a harmonious blend of funky modern, retro chic and antique furniture – there's no shortage of mod-cons but there are plenty of traditional features too. There are three large bedrooms, two with King size beds and one with two twin beds. The master bedroom has a wood burning stove, french windows on to the garden and a TV. The well equipped kitchen has everything you could possibly need and there are two bathrooms – so no queues in the morning!

The cottage sits in its own grounds with beautiful views across the valley and is approached via a gated driveway from a very quiet country lane. There is an outside dining area with BBQ, off-road parking for up to three cars, a lockable store and a tap for washing muddy bikes and boots. The nearest house is the farm across the lane and the only neighbours you're likely to meet are the inquisitive and friendly bullocks who live in the field next door. Our private, enclosed garden is kept in tip-top condition by our local gardener and the lawn is a nice size for an impromptu game of cricket or football.

There's also free wifi if you find it impossible to leave work behind or you have teenagers suffering from social media withdrawal.

You will have sole access to the house and grounds during your stay.

We live 80 miles away so you're unlikely to see us but we are always available by phone and email if you need us and we have a maintenance person for emergencies.

The picturesque Lakeland village of Hesket Newmarket is just a one mile stroll down a peaceful country lane and is home to The Old Crown, Britain's first co-operatively owned pub which boasts its own micro-brewery and was listed by the Guardian as the one of the 100 best bars in the world!

The remote Caldbeck Fells are on the doorstep and provide fantastic opportunities for walking and mountain biking.

The classic peaks of Blencathra and Helvellyn are both close by and provide some of the best walking and scrambling routes in the UK. If you prefer more hustle and bustle the popular town of Keswick is a 25 minute drive away whilst historic Hutton-in-the-Forest with its famous horse trials is just around the corner.

For long distance walkers The Cumbria Way passes through our valley and for road cyclists The Reivers Route (known as the Return CTC) goes right past the bottom of our drive!

There are lots of things to do close by, including:
• Hutton-in-the-Forest historic house
• Go Ape – treetop adventures
• boat hire and steamer trips on the lakes
• Hadrian's Wall
• Carlisle Castle
• Lazonby outdoor swimming pool
• The Eden Valley
• The beach at St Bees

The Lake District is the largest of the 13 national parks in England and Wales and is known the world over for its outstanding scenery of lakes and mountains.

The nearest mainline train stations are in Carlisle and Penrith – both about 15 miles away. A car is essential.

Facilities for children:
We have a selection of toys and books for younger children and a wide range of dvds and board games for children (and adults) of all ages. There is also a Wii with a selection of games. The house is very safe for toddlers with no steps or stairways and the enclosed safe garden is a great area in which to play out. We provide a cot, highchair, baby monitor and night-lights for families with babies.
