Description
This enchanting hideaway for two is a hop and a skip from Radda and Gaiole, two of Chianti’s most popular small towns. Thus, your only daily dilemma will be whether to while away the evening on your own terraces, enjoying the beauty of the surrounding manicured vineyards, or to head for one of several local restaurants. With Siena and San Gimignano less than an hour away, and Florence just a little further, exploring the wine-producing region and its cultural highlights is easy.
It will also be easy to stay at home for the day: the owners of Casuccia di Ama have made sure you have everything you need in this neat, charming property. Outside, on four different levels, the two terraces and garden are suntraps with views of gentle hills; the round pool is perfect for cooling-off; the built-in barbecue with stone sink, just outside the kitchen, is crying out to be used. Homely décor, traditional materials, a fireplace and cleverly organized interior make this cottage a great retreat when the weather is cooler.

Our Thoughts
We think you’ll remember staying at Casuccia di Ama as much for the hours ‘at home’ as for the days gadding about some of Tuscany’s best-known cities. Its modesty is its strength – the top terrace, for example, nestled into the roof against the adjoining villa, is a small but delightful place to watch the dusk come on. (And you’ll catch yourself nurturing an appreciation of Tuscany’s handmade roof tiles while you sip an evening aperitif here.) This is a well-kept and thought-out cottage – little wonder it draws people back for return visits.
Notes
Casuccia di Ama is semi-detached to a villa behind which belongs to a relative of the owner.
Its garden runs alongside a paved country road and, although it is protected from view by hedging, some noise from local traffic can be expected.
Pool
The round pool is partly sunken into the long, narrow, terraced garden. It has stone paving, sunbeds and an umbrella to one side, as well as a shower. The water is accessed by ladder steps.
Pool size: 4.5m diameter, 1.2m deep. Open May to September, weather permitting.
