Description

Something of a Tardis, this renovated cottage in Bricciano, a hamlet of 18th-century farmhouses in the heart of the Chianti hills, is a delight. At just one room deep, the villa is compact but its main rooms are surprisingly spacious and, with windows on two sides, light. When you see L’Agrifoglio’s position and views, across a landscape of olive groves, vineyards and wooded upper slopes, you’ll understand why it appealed to the artist who restored it. And an artistic sensibility infuses the whole property, from the pleasing interior décor and entrance loggia, which makes a wonderful outdoor dining room, to the elegant private infinity pool set in a generous secluded garden a brief walk away. Everything has been managed with a lovely simplicity.

The cottage comfortably absorbs parties of up to six – families, friends and couples have all stayed happily here. You’ll want to enjoy being part of this wine-growing region – Gaiole, one of its most popular centres, is your local town, just 10 minutes’ drive away; but you are also well placed for exploring the riches of Siena, Florence and San Gimignano.

Our Thoughts

While there’s a wealth of places to explore from L’Agrifoglio, you may find it difficult to tear yourself away from this refuge. We particularly love the infinity pool and its calm surroundings: a day could happily slide by moving between the water, sunloungers, jasmine-scented sleeping platform and shaded poolside dining table. The villa’s furnished loggia, with equally good views, will be another favourite spot for al-fresco meals, morning or evening. And don’t rule out L’Agrifoglio if you’re holidaying in the spring or autumn: its fireplace in the main room will keep you cosy.

Notes

Three bedrooms. Two bathrooms. If you require the twin-bedded room to be made up as a double, please request this at booking; similarly, if you need a cot, please say in which bedroom.

Air Condition is available inside the living room and all bedrooms.

The owners, who live in the hamlet, may occasionally use the pool when the pool area is untended by guests.

Firewood can be provided on request for an additional charge.

Fire Place: Stove

Pool

The fenced pool and its south-facing garden are a short walk, across the hamlet, from the villa.

The large, saltwater infinity pool has internal steps at one corner and a substantial deep end. The surrounding lawn has sunloungers, a table and chairs with a large parasol, and shaded sleeping platform. Pool size: 13m x 5m, 1.4m-2m deep. The pool is open from mid-April to mid-October, weather permitting. Pool chlorine free.
