#### Location
In a country full of magnificent coastal gems, Opatija still manages to stand out, shimmering and shining at every turn. Opatija is the Croatian word for abbey, and although the abbey is no longer standing, the incredible Church of St Jacob is a jewel that cannot be missed. Renaissance, Venetian, Gothic, ornate Secession, Baroque, Classicism and Alpine Baroque architecture blends to make this a superb city to walk around. You can easily understand why Opatija has been one of the most popular Croatian cities for sightseeing since the 19th century. The Croatian Walk of Fame makes for an interesting stroll, paying respect to the tennis legend Goran Ivanisevic as well as other famous Croatians. The most famous statue in Opatija is the ‘Girl with a Seagull'. The original now stands in the Croatian Museum of Tourism, but the seaside replacement makes a good photo opportunity. The beautiful promenade stretches for 12km between Volosko and Lovran. The two beloved fountains are dedicated to Helios and Selena, mythical Greek deities of the sun and the moon.

Rijeka is 12km to the west of the villa. It is Croatia's third largest city and is a bustling blend of Italianate Habsburg grandeur, a busy port and touristic carnival city. You will discover charm, culture, good nightlife and Croatia's most colourful carnival. Korzo, Rijeka's busy promenade is wonderful for a stroll, and the lively central market and fish market are hubs of activity. The fish market building is decorated with sculptures of sea creatures, looking almost like a temple of fish. Just next to the fish market you can buy fruit and vegetables at the central market. Rijeka's City Tower was built in the middle ages. The passage under the tower connects Korzo with the charming Old Town. Rijeka tunnel is among the most recent of the town's attractions. It was built in by Italians for military purposes. Trsat Castle is very interesting to visit and has a wonderful panorama. There are Blue Flag beaches and plenty of watersports. Ploce Beach is the most popular of the beaches in the north of the city.

The village of Kastav, a charming medieval village north of Rijeka, is perfect for walks and a pleasant coffee or lunch. There are many art workshops and cultural events. South of Rijeka is Bakar which is built like an amphitheatre on a hill. The historical nucleus was declared a cultural monument in 1968. The pedestrian-only Old Town is full of narrow, steep streets, many connected with staircases. Grobnik Castle in Cavle village is among the best-preserved castles in the area.
