For Casa Ginevra is a convenient base for exploring the Apennines near Lucca, a playground for walkers, cyclists and climbers in summer, and home to the popular ski resort of Abetone in winter. Amid the chestnut woods in the lush valleys of the Garfagnana, rushing streams provide thrilling rafting and canyoning, too.
There are less strenuous pursuits on offer nearby, too. The historic city of Lucca is a 40-minute drive, the beach at Viareggio is just an hour away, and a 90-minute journey rewards with the chance to explore the marble quarries at Carrara, home of the pure white stone used to create Rome’s Pantheon.
Of course, some days you will just want to relax at this cosy stone cottage cradled by woodland. The villa is entirely for your use - the 1st floor unoccupied. It's decorated in traditional Tuscan style, with terracotta floors and tiled and beamed ceilings - all the rooms are set on one level. The kitchen and lounge are open-plan connected by an arch, whilst the sleeping quarters with two double bedrooms - each having its own bathroom – are quietly tucked away.
We suspect you will spend most of your time in the spacious garden, which is unusually flat for a mountain retreat. It’s designed for outdoor living, with a covered terrace along one side of the house, equipped with an outdoor kitchen and set with a large table. Just a few steps across the lawn, is the luxurious pool. Slip into the cool water, focus on the sun crossing the sky above, and forget your cares and woes.
