Description

See Chianti and sigh. Il Solatio offers one of the most exquisite views of this classical landscape, with olive groves stretching out into the distance where they blur with the many vineyards to be found here. Take your time to enjoy this view from the sundeck by the pool and the lovingly tended terraced garden. A generously-sized property, Il Solatio is perfect for two families or a group of friends but its design, as two separate apartments, means that all parties can also enjoy independence when they wish.

Built into a hillside planted with heather and potted with shrubs, Il Solatio’s self-contained apartments, with independent entrances, are both full of character. There are terracotta floors and tiled and beamed ceilings, while stylish flourishes include antique-style double beds and, in the ground-floor apartment, there’s the cosy addition of a brick-built open fireplace. The grounds and grassed terrace are overlooked – guarded even – by slender, sentry-like yew trees. Benches, table and chairs make this outdoor area a convivial place for coming together to enjoy dinner or just a as a place to linger. But when you fancy a change of scene, the Chianti town of Radda is close by, while Siena and Florence are also within easy driving distance.

Our Thoughts

The pool, gardens and the views are the real eye-catchers at Il Solatio, but the rustic terracotta roof tiles and internal slanting roofs and tiled floors create the feel of a homely property that you’ll enjoy spending time in, too. The table football and table tennis tables, located on a small and elevated (but safe) terrace, will divert children (and adults, too).

Notes

Four double bedrooms. Four bathrooms. The property is bordered on two sides by trees and hills. There is underfloor heating. The property is reached via a 1km unpaved road in good condition. The ground-floor apartment is accessed by a flight of steps to side of house or via a wide slope. Entrance to the first-floor apartment is via the level driveway but there are internal steps down to the lounge-kitchen-diner.

Pool

The Roman ended pool has internal steps leading into the shallow end. The pool is screened on two sides by trees and hills and there are sun loungers and tables as well as a shaded quarter of decking with an L-shaped sofa.  The pool is too deep for non-swimming children.

Pool size: 14m x 6m, 1m-1.5m deep. Open April through October, weather permitting.
