Town: Cockermouth is a small market town in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, resting at the confluence of the Derwent and Cocker rivers, and is a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, while being only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is known for being the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes of Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
