Description

Villa Monumental is a traditionally-styled villa with a grand feel and sizeable outside space. With four double bedrooms and a large living room, eight guests can relax here in comfort and enjoy your time in Madeira.
Located on the outskirts of Maderia's capital of Funchal you will find Villa Monumental. The city's old town is always popular and is home to many shops and restaurants. With several restaurants serving a range of cuisines, there is something for everyone to enjoy. And the main shopping streets of Rua do Aljube, Rua da Carreira and Rua Dr Fernao Ornelas are great for when you need a bit of retail therapy.
You are welcomed into the majestic entrance hall upon your arrival at Villa Monumental. With rich wood flooring, a grand central staircase and a small seating area, this space sets the tone for the rest of the villa. Off the hallway, you will find the open-plan living and dining room. This vast space is truly impressive and is divided into two zones. The formal dining area is designated by a classic Turkish-style rug and low hanging light, under which a long, dark wooden dining table seating ten guests can be found. In the main area of the room is the living area. With two three-seater sofas and accompanying armchairs, there is plenty of space for everyone to relax at the end of long days exploring the local area. The grand fireplace is the focus of the room and to the side is a flat-screen television, perfect for movie nights or catching up with the latest sports.
The kitchen leads off the formal dining room and has a relaxed, country feel. A classic blue and white theme is in this room, with blue tiles and accessories bouncing off the white of the cabinets and flooring. Here you will find all the mod-cons needed to whip up a feast for the whole family. To the other side of the kitchen is a more casual dining room. Seating six guests around an oval table, this is a great place to grab a quick bite to eat before heading out for the day's adventures.
Three of the villa's four bedrooms are found on the first floor. Each as opulent and the last, the bedrooms are a true haven for relaxation, and each room even boasts direct access to a large balcony spanning the front of the house from which you can enjoy the wonderful views. Decorated in a traditional style, the first two bedrooms are home to double beds and boast rich wooden floors and dark wooden furniture. There are also two bathrooms on this floor for guests in these bedrooms to use. The master suite sits to the end of the villa and spans the width of the house. To the front is the bedroom with a large double bed and access to the upper balcony. There is also a small seating area with another balcony and a dressing room to store your clothes, not to mention the vast en-suite bathroom! The final bedroom is found on the lower floor, with a double bed and its own en-suite bathroom, this is a great retreat for those looking for a little more independence and privacy.
There is plenty of outside space to be enjoyed at Villa Monumental. The private swimming pool sits at an angle to the house and is easily accessed down a few steps from the living room. A lawned garden is to the front of the pool and is great for running around and playing. There is also a terrace around the pool dotted with sun loungers, so you don't need to travel far when you want to cool off! Out from the living area is a covered terrace with outdoor dining area, where you can enjoy alfresco dining and admire the views beyond.

The nearest beach to Villa Monumental is Praia Formosa. With its black pebble and sandy shores against the blue of the Atlantic, this pretty beach is great for a day out by the sea. No wonder it is so popular with both tourists and locals!
Funchal's historic Old Town is always buzzing and has a number of sights, restaurants and shops to visit. The main shopping streets of Rua do Aljube, Rua da Carreira and Rua Dr Fernao Ornelas are great for a bit of retail therapy. And when you fancy a bite to eat, there are numerous restaurants in the Old Town serving a range of cuisines so you'll certainly find something to your liking. The Cathedral of Funchal is one of the city's key historical landmarks and dates back to the 16th Century. The Cathedral was built during the peak of Portuguese power and was a symbol of their future and prosperity. The altarpiece at the Cathedral is quite special; with gilt woodwork, small sculptures and oil painting it is simply stunning.
The cable car running across the city is one of the most popular attractions in Funchal. Offering a unique perspective on the city from above and a fun ride, it is a truly enjoyable experience. And once you reach the top and have admired the stunning views, you can visit the Monte Gardens with its gorgeous ornamental gardens. Another fun and slightly more energetic activity in the hills of Funchal, is a toboggan ride back down the hill! Guided by two men, these rides offer a fast way to fly down the hillside and certainly gets the adrenaline pumping!
To the north of Madeira, you will find the village of Porto Moniz. Known for its volcanic pools, it offers a unique swimming experience for water lovers. And when you are done splashing about, head to Madeira Aquarium. Although small, the aquarium makes for a great afternoon out and is an excellent way for kids to learn more about the underwater world.
While staying on Madeira, be sure to visit the island's highest peak, Pico Ruivo. At 1,862 metres high, it offers beautiful views of across the island and is a wonderful place for hiking. One of the trails starts at Achada do Teixeira. Hikers taking this path will have to climb 300m up to reach the top, taking around an hour and a half, but when you reach the top the views are definitely worth it!
