Villa Tarcilla is perched in the hills atop the Atlantic ocean above Funchal, set within the heart of Palheiro Village in Madeira. The Palheiro Estate comprises of a resort style set-up, complete with 18 hole golf course, restaurants, spa, gym and shops, making for a convenient base to enjoy the island.
Overlooking the island's capital, Funchal, getting into the thick of local life is easy, while the island is renowned for its dramatic scenery and botanic gardens. With sun dappled mimosa-clad landscapes and volcanic soil, fertile with brightly sprouting blossom, hikers will be in paradise.
A gentle walk for intermediates starts at the Levada dos Tornos at Palheiro to the Funchal municipal botanical gardens. Or, the Levada do Norte between the hill villages of Estreito de Camara de Lobos and Nogueira takes visitors into the island's main wine-producing region, a patchwork of vineyards that cling to sheer cliff faces.
