Description

Villa Evangelini is an aristocratic 19th Century neo-classical villa which nestles among 3 acres of private gardens, orchards and olive groves in the exclusive area of Poseidonia on the unspoiled island of Syros. Broadly featured in the international media, this coral pink house with white shutters sleeps up to 9 guests in 4 bedrooms with separate guest houses which can accommodate up to a further 10 guests at additional cost. The house has been lovingly restored by its owners with antique furniture and vintage carpets and is both stylish and bohemian. The full size private, heated pool is surrounded by bamboo fencing to add to the feeling of complete seclusion and luxury.

Conde Nast wrote about Evangelini

"Posidonía. A honey-coloured house situated opposite a blue church. The rooms would hold their own in a lifestyle magazine, and are unusual by Greek standards in that they are furnished with antiques. The villa's grounds have been landscaped to provide various eating and seating areas, a large barbecue and a good-sized pool. Close to the villa are beaches, bars and tavernas at Agathopés, Fínikas and Mégas Gialós where swimming is safe and the food is of the high standard and generous quantities that prevail when Greeks themselves dominate the tourist population"

Entering into the villa through the delightful conservatory with tiled floor, comfortable sofa, dining table and armchairs, this leads into the spectacular entrance hall with its marble topped desk, antique chest and tons of books. The splendid drawing room, with seating for 9, has marble floors, antique furniture, dining table and many objets d’art. Shuttered windows on two sides look across the gardens. The downstairs bedroom (with twin beds and en-suite bathroom) is perfect for those guests with mobility problems. A pretty arch leads to the French windows which open onto the patio. The farmhouse kitchen is the hub of the house, with marble tiled floor, blue painted walls and pale blue handmade units, has an electric hob and oven and large fridge freezer. Local pottery adorns the walls. A wooden staircase leads to the landing where there are 3 bedrooms – all individual, all with air conditioning and all with breathtaking views. Bedroom 2 has a cast iron 4 poster double bed plus an additional single bed. The en-suite bathroom has a walk in shower, loo and sink. The antique mahogany furniture contrasts with the crisp white bed linen. French windows lead onto the balcony with views to the Church (conde nast described the villa as “a honey coloured house opposite a blue Church”). This is the perfect spot for a morning coffee enjoying the tranquil views across the gardens towards the surrounding hills. Bedroom 3 with its pale blue walls and nautical prints has twin beds, a wooden wardrobe and very high pitched wooden ceiling. French windows lead onto the second balcony with views across the gardens. The en-suite bathroom has a walk in shower with sink and loo. Bedroom 4 (The Indian Room) is furnished with lots of original prints and wall hangings. There are twin beds and a fitted wardrobe. As with the other upstairs bedrooms, French windows lead onto the balcony.

The gardens are a delight throughout the seasons with shaded corners, vine covered pergolas and splashes of colour from the clematis and bougainvillea. The entrance to the house is via a large metal gate and is walled on all sides making it safe for young children. The large veranda to the front of the house (the BBQ even has an electric roasting spit) is where you will probably dine during the summer months. A gigantic slab of thick marble makes up the dining table with seating for up to 12 guests. The original well is now a huge ornamental fish pond with pergola. A path leads to the pool area through the orchard with oranges, lemons, grapes (the owner makes his own wine), pomegranates, dates and bay trees. There are sun loungers with cream cushions and all in the shade of 2 magnificent palm trees to watch over you. There are shaded corners with occasional furniture dotted around for you to escape with a book or watch the spectacular bird life. The separate guest houses are delightfully comfortable and bohemian and have their own facilities.
