Surroundings:
The Lisboa and Vale do Tejo region is particularly suitable for getting to know the Portuguese and their cozy way of life. Although there is still very little tourism here, the country is relatively densely populated. There are many small original villages and some larger county towns where everyday Portuguese life goes its way. In the summer, the Portuguese from the larger cities like to spend their holidays with the family in this region, since everything here is the way they like it. Anyone interested in Portuguese culture and history will get their money's worth here. There is a lot to discover: medieval villages and monasteries that are on the list of world cultural heritage; Castles, stone witnesses that tell of their foundation by the Knights Templar; the legendary Christ monastery and finally Fátima, one of the world's most important pilgrimage sites. The interesting caves in the mountains and the footprints of their first visitors - the dinosaurs - date from much earlier times.
In the immediate vicinity of Lourinha lies Praia da Areia Branca, a typical bathing and surfing destination for the Portuguese.
Fortunately, there are very few hotels or holiday resorts here, but there is a lot going on on the beach in August, as many Portuguese from the area come to swim. There is a lifeguard who looks to the right and hundreds of the typical beach tents that can be rented for a small fee. If you want to escape this hustle and bustle, you only have to stroll along the beach or a cove and you have a bay for yourself again.
In Praia da Areia Branca there is a beautiful beach promenade with many small cafes and good restaurants.
Portugal has the best conditions for surfing in Europe and with its countless surf spots offers a lot of waves for every surfer. The beaches around Peniche are considered the best surfing area in Europe worldwide. The waves of the legendary surf spots "Supertubos" and "Baleal" are ridden by surfers from all over the world. In autumn 2017 the "Rip Curl Pro Portugal" will take place here for the ninth time. There are now many different surf schools and surf camps in the immediate vicinity of Peniche. A special highlight is the newly opened largest outdoor museum: Dinoparque Lourinhã nearby.
From the Lourinha bus station, a 10-minute walk away, you can take the Lisbon Lisboa-Peniche express bus to Lisbon, which is 65 km away, almost every hour.
