HISTORY OF THE CHATEAU
The first traces of the chateau date back to the 12th century.
It was lived in by the "du Bellay" family.
They were the cousins of the famous French poet Joachim du Bellay.
After there was the "Hautefort" family who is famous because Marie de Hautefort lived in the chateau for four years. She was greatly appreciated at the court of King Louis XIII and his wife Anne of Austria.
But, the cardinal Richelieu (the king’s counselor) who was jealous of her influence, exiled her to her grandmother's chateau. It was La Flotte.
After the Revolution, the chateau was badly damaged. The Marquis of La Roche-Bousseau rebuilt it.
In 1840 his son, carried out a lot of embellishments as seen today.
Since this time, the chateau has remained in the owner’s family.
