Garfield, CO (also known as Monarch), elevation 9500', is six miles east of the Continental Divide surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest. Garfield originated as a mining town in the early 1800's. In the latter part of the century a fire swept through town leaving only 3 original buildings, The School House, a log cabin and the Courthouse/Jail which is now known as the Old Timer Cabin. Scattered throughout the area you will find foundations of original mining cabins from 200 years ago.
