Maison Du Marché is set in beautiful landscaped gardens with vineyards to the front of the house, just outside the small Burgundy town of Chagny and close to historic Beaune.
You can wander into Chagny (2km) is about 20 minutes. It’s a lovely town which is especially famous for its Sunday morning market which is known to be one of the best in the area. There are also numerous restaurants, shops and supermarkets in the town. Food-lovers will especially appreciate Maison Lameloise, a 100-year old restaurant which boasts three Michelin stars. In July and August local wine-makers come to the town to host wine-tastings on a Sunday morning.
The town also has its own train station, a 20-minute walk from Maison Du Marché, with departures to many places including Beaune and Dijon.
It’s a town with some interesting historical features with its 13th century church a listed monument. This region is popular with nature lovers as well - if you love walking or cycling, head to the town’s canal, part of the Canal du Centre, within a short stroll where you can follow picturesque towpaths and boats plus there is some fantastic fishing nearby.
Also within a short drive or train ride away is the famous capital of this wine-producing region, Beaune (20km), where you can visit the amazing Hospices de Beaune, one of France’s most stunning historical buildings. Don’t miss the great market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings and food-lovers should also try and get to one of the many Michelin starred establishments in the town and surrounding wine villages.
You are also perfectly positioned to travel Burgundy’s famous wine road, Route des Grands Crus, which includes villages such as Puligny-Montrachet (7km), Pommard (15km), Volnay (14km), Meursault (12km) as well as idyllic vineyards across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune region where wine tastings can of course be arranged.
Furthermore, just 45-minutes by car is Autun (45km), founded by the Romans and full of historical sights, including a beautiful cathedral in the old town as well as a lovely central square which hosts a market on a Wednesday and Friday morning. There are hot-air balloon rides leaving from Autun, an amazing way to see some of the breath-taking vistas around you.
Dijon (65km), just under an hour away (or forty minutes by train), is a historical town with a delightful old quarter and of course famous mustard stores whilst Cluny (60km) to the south is a stunning medieval village most famous for its abbey, a National Monument of France, once the largest in the western world.
Within an hour you can also be entering the incredible Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan where you can discover woodlands, streams and waterfalls, gentle rolling hills and hidden villages. This region is perfect for hikers, horse-riders and cyclists and there’s a great variety of watersports on one of the lakes or rivers.
