Koh Samui is located in the Gulf of Siam. The island experiences more sunny days on average that those islands located in the Andaman Sea. There is no lengthy rainy season. It is a beautiful island boasting tranquil beaches, the buzz of famous Chaweng Beach, fantastic restaurants, glorious coconut groves, lush mountainous rain forest, buddas galore and incredible coral reefs. Nature imitates art with the natural geological formations known as Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks (Grandpa and Grandma rocks). They look like male and female genitalia, raising indulgent chuckles or embarrassed titters from visitors! The views from the rocks are spectacular. There is a small, white sandy beach close by though it is not suitable for swimming but the water is so clear you can see colourful marine life from the surface. Koh Tao, an island very close to Ko Samui, meaning ‘Turtle Island’ is the scuba diving destination choice of Thailand. It’s perfect white-sand beaches ring the hilly island. The vibrant coral reefs, exciting and colourful sea creatures, nodding palm trees and glittering blue seas are a great attraction. Na Muang’s two cascading waterfalls are very popular with a large pool sitting under the waterfall. If you are feeling adventurous, the best way to get to the beautiful waterfalls is via moped – they are very easy to drive. You will need swimming outfits and sensible shoes for the trekking part. You can also visit The Secret Buddha Garden, which is hidden away in the hills with majestic views and an unusual collection of statues and lush jungle. Ladyboy cabaret shows at Chaweng Beach are world-famous, with the ‘katoeys’ or ‘third-sex’ entertainers so feminine in their elaborate costumes and make-up. The tone is light-hearted sprinkled with glitter and glitz. At Angthong National Park, you can kayak to explore the beautiful surroundings or snorkel in the clear blue water. The scenery is spectacular with towering limestone mountains, thick jungle, white-sand beaches, fertile mangroves, waterfalls, lagoons and its emerald lake. Koh Samui has several famous Buddas. The most well-known is the famous 12 metre high, Big Buddha Shrine. It can be seen from several kilometres away. Inside the surrounding temple are many different shrines and other smaller ornate Buddhas. Close by Wat Plai Laem is a colourful and interesting Buddhist Temple with very ornate décor and art.
