Oliver's Insight...
Budva is a place where two worlds collide – on the one hand, you have a modern-day tourist industry and high-rise developments, on the other you have a well-preserved and charming Old Town which couldn't be more different. Both have something to offer, but it's the beaches which perhaps attract most of this Montenegrin resort's visitors. Even if they're busy, the superb views out across the Adriatic never fail to impress.

As the country's premier tourist destination, Budva is geared up for visitors. The Old Town has a lot of charm, and stretches down to the sea, commanding some incredible views from its highest points. You can lose yourself amongst its narrow little streets and pretty squares, admiring churches like Sv Trojica and Sv Ivan, and visiting its shops, galleries and cafes.

The Old Town is particularly pleasant in the summer months, when open-air theatre and performances add to the cultural offering. Lots of restaurants can be found around the Old Town's own small beach area – a lovely spot to stop for lunch.

Another nice hangout is the nearby Dukley Marina. Life is good here, with more restaurant terraces and water-taxi services providing a good way to explore the area. Budva offers a wide range of other attractions from historic monuments to nightclubs, a casino and water-parks, while its beachfront bars are the ideal place to watch the sun set.

The local cuisine is well worth trying while you're in town – look out for locally made honey, brandy, dried figs and the freshest of seafood from fish to octopus.
