Anzio is also known as the site of the landing of allied forces (Operation Shingle) and the battle of four months that followed (Anzio Campaign) during World War II. The Battle of Anzio is depicted in the movie The Wall by Pink Floyd and The Landing of Anzio Edward Dmytryk.
Anzio is also the birthplace of the emperors Caligula and Nerone where you can find many roman ruins including Domus Neroniana, has been identified as Nerone's residence.
