The Neighborhood:
Discover the spectacular island of Lipari in the heart of the volcanic archipelago of the Aeolian Islands! This Italian paradise, located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, north of Sicily, awaits you with its breathtaking landscapes and rich history.
- The Archaeological Museum is one of the most important in Italy in terms of underwater archaeology: from collections of marine amphorae to stone sarcophagi dating back to the Greek domination, to obsidian masks and utensils. These are some of the pieces housed in this museum, a review of the first cultural manifestations of the island.
- The entire northeastern coastline is covered by the dazzling white sand of the pumice and obsidian quarries that descend to the sea, Playa Bianca, which is reached by a steep flight of majolica stairs. If you prefer the free and solitary coasts, go to the beaches of Pietraliscia or Porticello, or to Secca della Forbice, in the Cappero area, much loved by the locals.
- If you want to pursue the wild soul of the island, one of the most interesting hiking trails is the rather demanding one that leads from the kaolin quarries to the thermal baths of San Calogero, passing through the sulfur fumaroles, a geomineral park, to the 19th century thermal baths turned museum, built over one of the oldest known thermal springs: next to its pools, dating back to the Hellenistic period, there is a funerary monument of Mycenaean origin.
- Make a stop inside the Castle at the Cathedral, dedicated to St. Bartholomew, the patron saint of the entire archipelago: the church still houses the "sacred thumb" of the saint, the only fragment mysteriously saved from the theft of the apostle's body, in 833, by the Beneventans. Now the finger "rests" in a silver reliquary in the shape of a blessing arm, which is exhibited during the festivities in honor of the saint.
- A must-see is the Chiostro de normanni, part of the first Benedictine monastery built in Sicily at the behest of King Roger II, so well-preserved and evocative that you will feel like you are on the set of a costume movie.
