Big Tancook Island is located approximately 10 km from the village of Chester, Nova Scotia. A passenger ferry provides daily scheduled access to both Big Tancook Island and Little Tancook Island. Leave your worries behind on the mainland, and a scenic 50 minute ferry ride will take you to another place, which will seem almost like another time. As soon as you step foot on Big Tancook Island, you are transported to a world apart, with friendly people, traditional island life, beaches and history to explore, and panoramic views. The air smells fresher, the water clearer, and the living sweet and simple.
Named for the family who built it in the 1940s, Wilson House is the quintessential island home. Located on a hill a short 5 minute walk from the ferry dock, the home has sweeping 180 degree views of the island shore and the Atlantic Ocean, with a spacious deck and sun room from which you can relax and absorb the majestic vistas. The home is well suited to all manner of vacation plans, from a quiet retreat to active family base.
Endless hours could be spent exploring the Island's many beaches and shores. Restaurants, shops, a museum, a library and a tourism center are among the island's offerings. At approximately 3 km long and 1 km wide, the entire island can be explored on foot. Or if cycling is more to your liking, bring your bike (freight, including bikes, is free to take on the ferry!) or borrow one (no cost) from Tancook Bikes, conveniently located next door to Wilson House. Finish your day lounging on the spacious deck, napping in the sun room, or cooking up some fresh seafood for dinner.
With scheduled ferry service daily, from your home base on Big Tancook Island you can easily explore the towns and villages of the mainland. Explore the village of Chester on foot, with many shops and restaurants to choose from. Or plan day trips to the picturesque and historic towns of Mahone Bay and Lunenburg (A UNESCO world heritage site). The possibilities are endless. And what better at the end of a busy day ashore, than a return to your island paradise.
