Maison Chouette is a charming farmhouse set in the stunning Normandy countryside, but only a short drive or cycle from the pretty town of La Haye-du-Puits, with its plentiful amenities including supermarket, boutiques, bakeries, butchers, banks, bars, antique shops, excellent restaurants and much more.
We are just a short drive to the beautiful sandy beaches on the west coast, where swimming in the sea is a joy. At low tide you may be lucky enough to forage yourself some treasures for dinner, such as oysters and mussels or just sit back and relax while you watch the local farmers driving across the sand in their tractors to collect their bounty from the great Atlantic.
Maison Chouette is conveniently located only 40 minutes from the ferry at Cherbourg and is within easy reach of some of the best tourist attractions in Normandy, for example, St. Mere Eglise (20 minutes), D-Day beaches (30 - 60 minutes), the historic town of Bayeux (45 minutes) and Le Mont St Michel (90 minutes).
Comfortably sleeping 6, Maison Chouette is a fantastic base for exploring the many wonderful sights in Normandy. With a private master en-suite above the kitchen and two further large bedrooms (one double / one twin) and bathroom above the lounge, it allows for a wide variety of guests, particularly those who wish for a little more privacy during their stay. All bedrooms are spacious, light and airy and have electric heaters.
Our spacious, traditional country farmhouse kitchen boasts ample dining and preparation space, with all the mod-cons of home, including a new range cooker, microwave, full size fridge freezer and dishwasher, so why not try your hand at a spot of cordon-bleu? A large wood burner really makes the kitchen the heart of the home, when enjoying a game and a few glasses of wine around the large farmhouse table.
We also cater for Al Fresco dining with our traditional French brick-built BBQ and outdoor dining area. Why not enjoy the sunset with the sound of the church bells at nearby Lithaire?
The lounge is light and bright, with double aspect windows and a patio door leading to the back garden. It is comfortably furnished with brand new luxury sofas and chairs and a new wall-mounted TV. No French farmhouse would be complete without a large wood burner, which keeps the whole house nice and cosy on those chilly Normandy evenings. We offer Freesat TV and a DVD player for days / nights at home. You’ll find a large selection of games, books and DVDs, suitable for all of the family.
There is a large ensuite bathroom in the master suite above the kitchen, with bath, shower over bath, toilet, basin and heated towel-rail. There is a downstairs WC with toilet and basin and a further family bathroom providing facilities for the double and twin bedrooms above the lounge. The family bathroom has a bath with shower over, toilet and basin.
There are electric heaters throughout the house and there are two large wood burners at each end of the house, which keep the whole house toasty. We keep the wood store well-stocked so you won’t be cold during your stay at Maison Chouette.
The rear garden has a large patio which contains the BBQ and lots of seating for Al Fresco dining and also gives access to the wood store and barn, where you will find a variety of outdoor games to entertain the kids during your stay.
Small steps lead up through the rockery into the garden, where you’ll find an abundance of wildlife in amongst the mature fruit trees and flowers. So breathe in the fresh Normandy air and try to spot our resident robin, finches, acrobatic squirrels, bats at dusk and hooting owls. Our only neighbour is the donkey next door who accepts any currency of apple for strokes!
Pets are not accepted at Maison Chouette.
Parking is at the front of the farmhouse, off-road with sufficient space for 2 cars.
To the rear of the garden, there is a disused railway line that runs for miles; perfect for walking, cycling and bird watching. You may be lucky enough to spot a resident roe deer amongst the foxgloves, as we did on a recent visit. A short walk away you will find Mont Castre; an old quarry turned nature reserve, which is a fabulous circular walk. taking in some magnificent sites, including a Roman Fort (wear Wellies during Autumn / Winter).
La Haye-du-Puits has everything you could need during your visit to Normandy and we particularly recommend Restaurant Pom’ Cannelle for fine dining at very reasonable prices ( Le Commerce if you prefer your steak to be cooked in front of you on an open fire and served with a boatload of fries, or just a short drive to the pretty seaside town of Pirou, you will find an amazing seafood restaurant called Restaurant de le Mer (but do call ahead to check they are open as their hours are a little unpredictable!)
There is so much to do in Normandy, but for those days when you wish to relax at home, we have Freesat TV and there are lots of DVDs, games and books to choose from. Our large garden is well-equipped for sunbathing and also keeping kids entertained. For cosy nights in, the two wood burners will keep you toasty, so why not open a bottle of Cidre or vin rouge and curl up in the comfy lounge with a movie or good book.
Maison Chouette is suitable for families with children, friends and couples. It is not suitable for people with limited mobility due to the stairs required to reach the bedrooms.
