Description

We're pleased to welcome you to a 300 year old stone barn on the Podere Sant'Angelo estate in the heart of Maremma. Where once wine, cheese and cereals were stored, today you'll find our romantic holiday home 'Zolferate'. With its 50 square metres, a bedroom with a double bed, a fold-out armchair for one more person and a living area with sofa bed, it's perfect for couples or small families. For our smaller guests, we'll be happy to provide you with a cot and a highchair. The interior is authentic with traditional chestnut beams, terracotta tiles and a fireplace typical of the region. The living area is equipped with a small but fine 'cucina in muratura' (traditional Tuscan kitchen area), equipped with microwave, refrigerator and a stone sink. The bathroom has a walk in shower, hairdryer and a towel dryer.

Could 'Zolferate' be any more Italian? Yes ... ! A feast for the senses awaits you in your private garden with plants in splendid colours and aromatic herbs such as rosemary, lavender, santolina and sage. Grab a sun chair and let your gaze wander northwards to Monte Labro or over the hills towards Roccalbegna. Spend enjoyable evenings on the terrace until the starry night sky stretches over the landscape. Despite the quiet location, you can be in the most beautiful cities of Tuscany in no time at all. The beaches of Grosseto are only an hour's drive away and you're connected to the world, if you want to be, via our free WiFi. A safe, bed linen and towels are included as well as all additional costs for gas and electricity. A washing machine can be used for a small fee.

Your host will welcome you in English, German, French or Italian and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Escape the stresses and strains of everyday life and experience Tuscany in its most original form - on hikes through dense oak and chestnut forests, on walks through medieval villagess or in the hot springs of Saturnia.

Podere Sant'Angelo is situated in the Maremma, the southern part of Tuscany, off the regular road network, about six kilometres from the picturesque village of Roccalbegna and can be reached by a three kilometre 'strada bianca' (gravel road). The Maremma runs south from Siena to the border with Lazio. This region brings together all the clichés: historical villages and churches with Renaissance frescoes, ancient Etruscan towns and traditional ceramics handicrafts alternate with fantastic wines and traditional food. Unspoilt trails wind through unique nature reserves, there are deserted beaches with crystal clear waters, as well as cultural treasures and artfully designed gardens.

In the medieval streets of Roccalbegna you will find all the amenities for your holiday. The 9th-century village with 300 people has two grocery stores, a trattoria and a butcher, as well as a pharmacy and a bank.

The famous sulphur springs of Saturnia are a 25-minute drive away. The hot, sulphurous water was already known to the Etruscans. Enjoy a visit to the 'Terme di Saturnia Hotel', the fifth-largest thermal baths in Europe, or visit the nearby waterfall with free 24 hour entry and free parking.

For nature lovers a trip to the WWF nature reserve 'Bosco die Rocconi' is worthwhile. The rivers Albegna and Rigo have formed impressive gorges over the centuries. The calcareous rocks, surrounded by Mediterranean forests, are home to many species of birds of prey such as the red kite and the dwarf eagle. The Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and model for paintings by famous Renaissance artists, is about 35 kilometres away. The Etruscan remains of Sovana and Pitigliano can be reached by car in about 35 minutes.

Deserted beaches? You can find these here too! On the coast of southern Tuscany there are also quiet bathing resorts. Castiglione della Pescaia receives the 'cleanest beach' award year after year from the EU. In less than an hour by car you can reach the natural beach in the 'Parco Naturale di Maremma', where you can relax on the 8 kilometre-long golden sandy beach. There's plenty of room here, even in August.

Discover classic Tuscany: San Gimignano, Siena and Florence are within easy reach, as are the villages of Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza. Day trips to Rome are also possible by train from Grosseto.

Good to know: Podere Sant'Angelo is off the regular road network. You reach the holiday home after three kilometres on a 'strada bianca' (gravel road).
