Region:
A safe haven from today's modern society and just a short traveling distance from most European major cities, Madeira island offer superb accommodation, fantastic scenery and an escape from all that is wrong with the mass-tourism in the coasts. The capital, Funchal, is renowned as much for its food as it is for its clean, crime-free streets.
The island is located in the Atlantic Ocean, just northwest of the Canary Islands and a little further away from Africa, which gives it the balmy summers and warm winters it's famous for... the ideal holiday destination all year round.
Funchal has several festivities all year round to offer. From the worldwide known New Year´s Eve fireworks, to Carnival, to the Flower Festival, the Atlantic Festival, to name just a few, Madeira´s capital dresses up in vivid colors and joy to greet the ones who pass by.
Take a boat or catamaran trip from the harbor in Funchal and enjoy the beautiful landscape or experience sports fishing. Take the opportunity to enjoy a whale and dolphin watch trip. If you have a more adventurous soul discover Arco da Calheta from above while paragliding or walk along a levada (trail walks), one of the most exciting experiences to have on the island. There is more than 3,000 km of irrigation channels that guide you through the most beautiful landscapes of the Island. Just a few minutes driving from Arco da Calheta, in Rabaçal you will find some of the most popular levada walks in the Island. Levada das 25 Fontes and Levada do Risco flow parallel to each other, both heading to the Hydroelectric Power Station in Calheta. The scenery and landscape leading up to the Risco waterfall are identical, although each levada has its own particularities such as the waterfalls and beautiful views of the profound valleys.
