Canyamel (Sugar Cane )used to be grown in this part of Mallorca during the 18th century and this where the name Canyamel is derived from which refers to sugar cane and honey in ancient Latin. It is still referred to today by British ex-pats as ‘Caramel' or ‘Caramelo' in Spanish. There is an influx of fresh water to the beach via the ‘Torrente de Canyamel' river which runs 8-kilometres from the nearby ancient town of Arta. This river also runs to the small lake of ‘s'Estanyi de sa Torre' which was given to the people of Canyamel in 1446 by King Juan II of Aragon. Like many coastal towns in Mallorca, Canyamel has a history of fending off pirate attacks.
